A number of your typical everyone’s-a-winner review sites liked it, but I couldn’t find any “real” opinion. My usual go-to source, AV Club, just gave one of their super mega ultra-lame one-liner blurbs in their even more painfully lame What’s On Tonight? column.

I watched all 3, it was great. Sure they watered it down to fit it on TV, but overall it was great.

Entertaining. Not sure how much is HD marketing.

I liked it. I took it with a small grain of salt though because obviously everything is dramatized and exaggerated to make good TV. I don’t know a ton on the small details of Harley Davidson’s history, but I have a feeling that this was a based on real events thing and not this is exactly how it happened.

I also felt like it went really fast, they covered thirty some years in six hours, and I felt like they left a ton of detail out. Oh hey we made an engine run and put it in a bike, now were producing motorcycles. Then bam!, years upon years later, here’s our first V-twin, which they didn’t really show the significance of. It was just, here’s a new motor, lets do more races. Same thing with the Knucklehead. So overall it showed some of the development, but I think this could have easily made a whole season of shows instead of a three night mini series.

I really liked the “outlaw” kids in the last episode, showing how people kept motorcycle enthusiasm alive throughout the great depression and how they were improvising and building bikes from scraps and spares. It was cool to watch the Davidson’s characters come to the realization that these hoodlums were a driving force in keeping the doors open at HD, and were likely the future of their company.

Last criticism. I felt like they focused too much on the Indian rivalry. I know Indian was HD’s biggest rival, but it felt like it was a very personal rivalry (maybe it was though?) and the multitude of other manufactures at the time didn’t matter. They spent a little time on the Flying Merkel rivalry, and there was mentions of Excelsior Henderson, Thor, and Pope, but the main focus was clearly biased toward Indian.

Overall I really enjoyed the show, if it comes out on a DVD I will probably buy it, but I think that they could have done so much more.

Great bit of propaganda.
